Rep. Schiff Introduces Bill to Reduce Airport Noise with Nighttime Curfew

Washington, DC — Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) introduced the Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act, permitting airports to implement partial or total mandatory nighttime curfews to minimize airport noise.

“Residents living under flight paths and near airport terminals shouldn't have to endure sleep-disruptive noise from late night and early morning air traffic,” said Rep. Schiff. “The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act would implement nighttime curfews and ensure residents aren't disturbed at night. It is time we provide the rest and relief that residents deserve.”

“On behalf of the City of Burbank and the Council, I want to express our unwavering support for the Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act which would allow for the first time a mandatory nighttime curfew at the Hollywood Burbank Airport," said Burbank Mayor, Konstantine Anthony. "This measure is essential not only for the welfare of Burbank's residents but also for the well-being of the entire valley community. Our commitment to safeguarding the nighttime noise environment spans five decades of dedicated effort. We extend our sincere gratitude to Congressmen Schiff for advocating for nighttime noise protection. Together, we shall continue our mission to ensure the peace and tranquility of our beloved residents during the night and look forward to a permanent solution.”

The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act would apply only to airports that already had adopted a voluntary curfew prior to the enactment of the Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990, which had imposed strict criteria for airports wishing to establish nighttime curfews and implement noise-related regulations and restrictions.

This legislation is cosponsored by Representatives Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), and Mike Quigley (D-Ill.).

This bill is endorsed by the Hollywood Burbank Airport Authority.
